Casey Holland
Casey Holland is a humble individual that loves his job and counts his blessings everyday for what he has. Casey is the Art Director of RVCA and their magazine, ANP Quarterly - a combined effort between the good people at RVCA, Aaron Rose, Ed Templeton, and Brendan Fowler. The clothing line and arts magazine focuses on a broad sense of art, community, and lifestyle, providing something of substance and culture and doing it with integrity. Casey brings us into his office and shows us his workspace, influences, and inspirations.
What do you do and what are you working on?
I
am the Art Director for RVCA and at the moment we are beginning our
Holiday 10 season on the clothing side of things, planning 2010
marketing creative and working on an art show that PM Tenore (RVCA
founder) is curating.
What is an average day like for you?
It
all begins by helping to get the kids ready for their day, then
straight to coffee. Come into work and get a quick web check and update
with the crew--- then it’s straight into a non-stop workday: speaking
with artists, attending to ANP Quarterly matters, and working with the
team on creative and the range. Then around 7.30 or so, it’s time to go
home.
What are some of your inspirations?
Maybe
as predictable as it sounds, just working here at RVCA is very
inspirational. The building is filled with art and installations, and
we always have the super interesting people coming through for a visit.
At the same time, I get a ton of inspiration from travel: Europe,
Japan, NY... Really anywhere.
What is your favorite thing about working on ANP Quarterly?
My
favorite thing about working on ANPQ is learning about new artists,
musicians and cultural figures. And the editors. Brendan Fowler, Aaron
Rose and Ed Templeton are all really great guys to work with, not to
mention the wealth of knowledge they bring to the table.
Who are some artists that you admire?
There
are too many artists to list, that I admire. Besides the people that I
already work with, I guess a few would be Daido Moriyama, Gee Vaucher,
Richard Prince, Wade Guyton, Jenny Holzer, Ed Ruscha, ... May have to
get back to you on this one!
What do you do to relax?
Well, I don’t relax too much. Unfortunately. But it would be a good snow trip with family and/or friends.
There is a ton of work around the building. This huge piece by Ed
Templeton is right outside my office and and I often catch myself
stopping and staring at this quite often. The scale of it is huge and
really love the color and patterning he employed within the work. It
was a big step out side of the single panel/canvas that he has done in
the past.
Brendan Fowler, one of the editors of ANPQ and a good friend, gave this
composite photo to me for Christmas a couple years ago. It hangs above
the door of my office and gives me a smile every time I walk out. He is
a real special person and his generosity never ends.
These are a few images that I drew upon for our last season.Will be
coming down soon... At least some of them. Really like the tonality
used in the photography and there are some installation examples in
there that are timeless. Also have a few printouts from some of the
artists we are working with right now: Mark McCoy, Arien Valizadeh,
Alex Matus and Jamal Becker --- all super talented folks.
Again, more examples of artwork that I just dig around the
space. These Hulas girls by Kevin Ancell are part of a larger
installation, but these two guard the entry to the art department. Plug
these babies in and they’ll hula all day long. Kevin has been a huge
part of the Artist Network Program and it’s an honor to be able to live
with these every day.
The recent issue of the ANP Quarterly just came in. this last one took
a long time to get out the door, but it was worth it... I think. It is
the largest yet and has some of the most diverse subject matter yet.
After pouring so much thought and time into the issue, it’s hard to
pick back up and read. Will get to it some day though.
These hang right next to my chair, purposefully so --- all are some my
favorite objects here. My 3-year old daughter made the flag and stars
collage for me a couple months ago—love that thing. Also up there is
the Beautiful Losers movie poster, A shot from the first RVCA x Erin
Wasson campaign a Daido Moriyama photograph and note from a friend and
artist, Mark Mulroney.
I get to drive by this mural every day I come into work. Love it. I was
able to be with Barry when he painted this earlier this year on our
building and is just amazing to watch execute his pieces. When you see
it in action, you realize how extremely complicated and thought-out his
compositions and work are.
And this is my actual office within the art department. Looks clean
right now, but it can often look like a tornado has hit this place. I
spend a good 10 hours a day here, so I try to keep in somewhat in
order. The art department here is an amazing crew of guys and feel
extremely fortunate to work in this environment.
